At first glance, graphic novels may seem like mere entertainment, but they can also be valuable learning tools. For example, In the United States, instructors use graphic novels to teach various subjects. In Japan, English-translated manga is used in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) courses.

Here are some statements about the benefits of reading graphic novels:

"there is a considerable evidence that comic books can and do lead to more 'serious' reading" (Stephen Krashen)

"graphic novels can help explain how language works both for and against people and enable students to acquire and and an appreciation for critical literacy" (Christian Chu)

"comics are an ideal vehicle for words study" (Stephen Cary)

Manga can have either detailed or simple artwork, and the same applies to language. Books can be challenging for language learners, as it is easy to get lost or misunderstand something. The art in manga helps readers follow the story, and when they don't understand the text, the artwork provides a better understanding.

So, in view of the above, learning English through manga is a good choice for several reasons

  • Firstly, manga is often written in simplified English, making it easier for beginners to understand.
  • Secondly, manga provides a visual context that can help learners better understand the meaning of words and phrases.
  • Thirdly, manga can be a fun and engaging way to learn English as it allows learners to immerse themselves in the language and culture through the stories they read.
